There are so many great resources for teachers and reading specialists to use in the area of reading. Two of the resources used by my district include NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) and IXL.com. These resources allow us two points of data to turn to when looking for ways to help our students. |
NWEA MAP TestingWe test our students 3 times a year with MAP. The data we gain from this test allows teachers to guide their instruction directly to where the student may have gaps or gives us information about where we need to be to help students excel. We use the goal-setting sheets with students which allows them to see where they currently are and set a goal as to where they would like to be after testing. The MAP data is also a great tool to use when talking with parents about where their student is specifically compared to peers as well as nationwide.

Ixl.comIXL.com is a resource purchased by our district for students to use at school as well as at home to direct them to areas that are recommended specifically to their learning needs. This resource has so many great aspects for teachers, parents, and students. As a teacher, the diagnostic piece gives feedback to where the student is currently reading. The students then receive the recommended skills they need to work on to help fill any gaps or push them to areas they are ready to learn. A report can also be printed out for parents to use at home to know what their child should be working on. According to commonsense.org, IXL provides class and individual reports with item analysis, usage, and trouble spots that allow parents and teachers to get the specific information they need to differentiate instruction for their kids.
